That’s killing time and talent. I bet everyone who might read this has been stunned by making a hat trick shot or ‘gotten very lucky’ in hitting an insane shot when, In the PRESENT, they didn’t care about making the insane shot. They just played. When an archer is shooting for nothing, he has all his skill. If he shoots for a brass buckle, he is already nervous. If he shoots for a prize of gold, he goes blind or sees two targets. He is out of his mind. His skill has not changed, but the prize divides him. He cares. He thinks more of winning than of shooting and the need to win drains him of power. Coach Callipari, UK basketball’s head coach, said something that made much sense. “If a player depends on me as their PRIMARY source for self-confidence, they have also given me the power to destroy their self-confidence with one single critical word.”
